Issue 18

In this month's edition of Boardtalk...

President's Message
The relationship between veterinary practice and rules about the use of chemical substances for animals used in sport has been highlighted by recent media reports. Over the last few weeks I have been asked by several Veterinarians how the Veterinary Surgeons Act and regulatory code of conduct relates to ‘current standards’ and the Australian Equine Veterinary Association (AEVA) Code of Conduct plus the Thoroughbred Racing Board (TRB) Rules of Racing. more

From the Registrar's Desk
Since the last Boardtalk Noelle O’Connor has left the Board’s employ to return to Ireland. We all wish her and her husband Pat Cullen every happiness and prosperity for the future.

Maria Tsoutis commenced duties with the Board on 14 June. Maria comes to us with a varied background in design, IT and administration and looks forward to taking over this busy role.

From the Hospital Inspector's Desk

In this edition I have endeavoured to interpret Part 6 of the Veterinary Practice Act 2003 which sets out the requirements for Veterinary Hospitals. As some sections in the Act are long-winded, I will summarise them.

The Act will become operational when the complementing Regulations are available (the Board or Staff have no control over this legislative process). more

VSIC - Veterinary Surgeons Investigating Committee
The December 2003 Boardtalk reported on the conviction of Dr Sven Arne Temmingh in the Supreme Court of NSW relating to breaches of the Stock Medicines Act 1989. more

Tail Docking
Since Tuesday 1 June 2004 it has become an offence in NSW to dock the tail of a dog unless the docking is done by a registered Veterinary surgeon in the interests of the dog’s welfare. more

Veterinary Surgeon Annual Roll Fees for 2005
This month, you will be receiving your individual Annual Roll Fee forms. The Roll Fee covers your registration from 1 January - 31 December 2005. It is due by 31 October 2004. The amount is $235. There is no provision under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1986 for temporary or part year registration. Whether you work for one day or 365 days, the full annual fee is payable.

Changing Your Address ?

Under Section 13 of the Veterinary Surgeons Regulations 1995 :
"A veterinary surgeon must, within 14 days after changing his or her residential address or the place at which the veterinary surgeon practises, notify the Board in writing of that change."
The Board accepts this in the form of a written letter, an email or a fax.
